Indiana Judges & Lawyers Assistance Program, and “Humanizing Law School”

JLAP.DONERemember our therapy dogs event during fall semester finals, as well as during the IU McKinney Wellness Fair?  These loving pups represent just one of the many therapeutic services that the Judges and Lawyers Assistance Program (JLAP) offers to members of the bar and bench in the state of Indiana.

Currently on display in the Ruth Lilly Law Library is information about JLAP: a service that you can depend on and enjoy now as a student, and throughout your career.  For online information about JLAP, please click here!

There are also booklets available at the base of the display about facing and improving your response to stress now while you’re in law school.  The Hidden Sources of Law School Stress: Avoiding the Mistakes That Create Unhappy and Unprofessional Lawyers by Florida State University’s law professor Lawrence S. Krieger, provides resources to build upon for a foundation of sustainable health and joy no matter where the road takes you.

An excerpt from the booklet:

Antidotes: While you are learning to think: “like a lawyer,” be very clear that this is a legal skill but not a life skill.  In situations that don’t call for strict legal analysis, continue to be who you were when you came to law school. (Krieger, 9)

Please take a booklet with you!  There are bookmarks and additional information about JLAP and law school self-care available at the Circulation Desk.

“I know what it is like to fear making a call to JLAP.  If you think you might have a problem, there is no downside to contacting JLAP.

Your call is completely confidential, you can talk to staff or to another attorney who is a JLAP volunteer, and they will not report you or tell anyone about your conversation.”

Special thanks to Ed Seykowski at the IU Northwest Library for emailing me and pinpointing an important question of where to go to find these resources. You rock!
