UITS IT Training Series

Travel & Work

While I was sitting at the Circulation Desk last Friday, I overheard many students and staff members discussing their spring break plans.  Many members of our community are escaping to fun destinations and visiting with family and friends, but there is a great bunch of us who will stay local over break to catch up with assignments and projects.  It dawned on me the potential that this week holds to do the things that we never seem to have the time to do, and some free IT training came to mind.

What better way to spend some of that downtime than by polishing our skills in Excel, Powerpoint, even XML?!

The University Information Technology Services (UITS) offers phenomenal online IT training opportunities for all levels of competencies.  The best news?  For the IUPUI community, this is a free service!

For starters, the UITS website is dynamic and engaging.  By simply searching for “training,” a whole host of options are returned:

UITS TrainingIf you don’t find what you’re seeking after exploring these options, the UITS contact information is easily accessible from this page:

UITS Contact Info↑ If you choose the “Workshops and online presentations” result, you’ll come to a screen where you can search for a specific topic and subtopic:

UITS SubtopicsBy opening a subtopic, such as the one captured below for Excel 2013: The Basics, (an online workshop I attended earlier this semester, and it was excellent), you’ll see how long the workshop lasts, what equipment is needed to complete the workshop, the downloadable material for the workshop, and even previous users’ reviews!

These synchronous workshops do have specific dates and require (free) registration, but there are also asynchronous opportunities available as well.

Under the red “Training” tab at the top of the page:

↑ You’ll find a listing of self-paced workshops, such as Microsoft eLearning Courses.

UITS Downloads

↑ If you’d just like the downloadable files from the workshops (PC files, Mac files, PDF files), these can be accessed under the red “Downloads” tab. ← You’ll also find recorded webinars and tutorials via Adobe Connect from previous IT workshops.

Check out upcoming workshops, and don’t forget to register!

For additional information on UITS, check out their contact information page (serving both Indianapolis and Bloomington campuses).

UITS even has their own blog, IT Training Tips!  Check it out: http://ittrainingtips.iu.edu/

Happy Spring Break!
